CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- A retired UNC professor and her husband are brutally hurt following a home invasion.

  • A couple is recovering after a brutal home invasion.
  • One of them is a retired UNC professor.
  • Neighbors say they are in their late 60s or early 70s. 

It happened early Friday morning in Chapel Hill on Lucas Farm Lane near New Hope Church Road.

Deputies are looking for suspects. Deputies say they got the call around 2 a.m.

Neighbors tell us the victims are Rebecca and Dave Laudicina. They are in their late 60s or early 70s.

Rebecca is a retired professor at the UNC School of Medicine. Neighbors tell us that her husband was shot in the hand and Rebecca suffered from some facial fractures.

Somehow, they managed to run to another neighbor's house to get help and they were taken to the hospital with their injuries.

One neighbor is still stunned over what happened.

“Preliminarily, obviously, everybody is concerned about neighbors who were affected by this. But we've already started to discuss about a neighborhood protection schemes to try to prevent this from happening again,” said Michel Khouri.

Some of the neighbors here do have surveillance cameras and deputies spent the morning talking with them.

The sheriff's office is offering $2,500 in reward money for information leading to an arrest and conviction of the suspect.
