DURHAM, N.C. -- Police plan to cut the ribbon on their new headquarters this Saturday at noon. The public is invited to the grand opening from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m.

  • The building on 602 East Main St. is 125,000 square feet
  • It features a spacious lobby, bigger offices, and a state-of-the-art 911 call center
  • The old headquarters on West Chapel Hill Street is aging and too expensive to maintain

Spectrum News got a tour of the 125,000 square foot building on 602 East Main St. on Wednesday. The four-story building features plenty of room.

“We feel like we're nestled right in the middle of the community that we serve on a regular basis,” said Chief Cerelyn Davis.

The building features a spacious lobby, bigger offices, and a state-of-the-art 911 call center.

“We will be able to share information quicker, better, and more efficiently,” said Randy Beeman, Director of Emergency Communications.

The headquarters will replace the current one on West Chapel Hill Street. City officials say the building is aging and too expensive to maintain.

“To be able to come into a building and just go to work and not have to deal with water that's not flowing appropriately and pipes that are busting,” added Davis.

Some officers and employees have already moved into the new location. The department hopes to finish the transition from the old to new headquarters by the end of the year.
