RALEIGH, N.C. -- Bird and Lime scooters will remain on the streets of Raleigh, for now at least.

  • Electronic Scooters are currently not regulated in the city
  • Some feel more regulation needs to take place while others prefer the free reign
  • Besides safety gear, councilmen are also looking at how riders can be safer when it comes to riding in areas that don't cause an issue for drivers

During a city council meeting on Tuesday, members voted for "option 1," which means they will look into regulating the scooters as soon as possible, but in the meantime, they will remain throughout the city.

Electronic Scooters are currently not regulated in the city.

Some feel more regulation needs to take place while others prefer the free reign.

During the meeting, Raleigh Police Chief Cassandra Deck-Brown urged the council to put a cap on the number of Bird and Lime scooters in the city. She said police already dealt with criminal incidents regarding the scooters, and they don’t have the resources to enforce scooter rules 24/7.

Councilwoman Nicole Stewart weighed in favor of the scooters. She said the city should embrace the new transportation technology and that the scooters help the city achieve their goal of having fewer cars on the road.

Besides safety gear, councilmen are also looking at how riders can be safer when it comes to riding in areas that don't cause an issue for drivers.
