CHAPEL HILL, NORTH CAROLINA -- Some students gathered at UNC Friday for the Believe Survivors Rally. They wanted to show support for all sexual assault victims.

  • Organizers say the event was to let survivors know they are supported
  • Dr. Ford accused Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault
  • She is a graduate of UNC and is nominated for the Distinguished Alumna Award

“I organized this mainly to let survivors on this campus and this community know that we believe them and we support them,” says organizer Hannah Inman.

Inman held the event in honor of UNC alumna Christine Ford. She's the woman who made national headlines after accusing Supreme Court Justice Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. She publicly testified during his contentious confirmation hearing.

“We really want to honor her bravery and recognize that what she did was not in vain,” Inman said.

“I thought it was pretty shameful that he was confirmed especially with just the preponderance of evidence against him,” added student Cameron Whitener who attended the rally.

Some at the rally held signs and chanted. Some also even shared their own stories of sexual assault, but they say much more needs to be done to progress.

“Our hope is that eventually they will be believed,” Inman said.

Ford graduated from UNC-Chapel Hill in 1988. She's now nominated for the university's “Distinguished Alumna Award.
