DURHAM, N.C. — Duke University is upping its tech game. Students can now download their ID cards on certain mobile devices.

  • The ID cards allow students to enter buildings and pay for items on campus with just one tap
  • Administrators say this will also increase safety and security on campus
  • Right now, the mobile ID cards are only available for the Apple iPhone and Apple Watch

It will allow them to enter buildings and pay for items on campus with just one tap.

“I used to carry my Duke card all the time. I know I'll occasionally lose it, leave it in my dorm. I never forgot my phone. I always have my Apple Watch on,” said student Juan Bermudez.

Administrators say this will also increase safety and security on campus as students can sometimes lose their physical cards.

“Physical cards can be lost or stolen and it can be difficult to turn that credential off,” said Tracy Futhey, Vice President of Information Technology and Chief Information Officer.

Some on campus say they're not too concerned about others stealing their identity.

“If you have a newer iPhone then you have to verify your face ID in order to purchase anything,” said Angela Moon.

Right now, the mobile ID cards are only available for the Apple iPhone and Apple Watch. Duke administrators hope to add Androids and other devices to that list in the future.
