WILMINGTON, N.C. -- A man known as the "Ambassador of Wilmington" died Wednesday morning as the result of an infection he sustained during Hurricane Florence.

  • Ron Phelps died from an infection he sustained after Hurricane Florence.
  • Phelps attempted to seek help, but floodwaters prevented him from making it to a hospital.
  • Phelps moderated the popular Facebook Group, Hometown Memories of Wilmington.

Ron Phelps, who moderates the popular Facebook Group, Hometown Memories of Wilmington, was clearing his yard after Florence and suffered a serious cut. That cut became infected from bacteria in the floodwaters.

Phelps attempted to drive himself to a hospital, but was unable to due to flooding. 

When Phelps was finally able to get help he was taken to the ICU and his leg had to be amputated.

As a result of the infection spreading, Mr. Phelps passed away on the morning of Sept. 25.
