WILMINGTON, N.C. – The North Carolina Department of Transportation is helping you find your way to the coast after Hurricane Florence damaged hundreds of roads and interstates.

As of Saturday morning, there are 550 statewide road closures. Additionally, NCDOT says rivers are cresting over the weekend which is why some roads remain impassasable including I-40 near Wilmington. Crews are waiting until the water recedes to assess damage and make repairs.

Recommended Routes:

  • From the south, take U.S. 17 to reach Wilmington
  • From the north, travel on Interstate 40 East to N.C. 24 East (exit 373), then onto U.S. 17 South to reach Wilmington
  • From Fayetteville, take N.C. 87 to U.S. 701 South to N.C. 211 East to U.S. 74 East to reach Wilmington
  • Take I-40 to N.C. 24 (exit 373) to reach Jacksonville

The department urges drivers to never go around barricades or travel on flooded roads. They also say to avoid unnecessary travel to hard-hit areas where flooding remains a concern.
