CHARLOTTE, N.C. -- People along the Carolina coasts are evacuating ahead of Hurricane Florence. Also making the trip inland are hundreds of animals.

The Hilton Head Humane Association sent 26 dogs to One Lucky Pup Daycare in Charlotte. The dogs came in Sunday and are available for adoption. 

Amanda Kozlowski, the owner of One Lucky Pup, says they wanted to help the animals as much as possible and she would love to see some of them find forever homes in the Queen City. 

"I'm sure that after the storm, the shelter is going to be full again with other dogs needing homes, so if we can help some of these guys while they're here, then that makes more room for needy dogs back there in Hilton Head," Kozlowski says. 

The Humane Society of Charlotte is also helping take in animals. 

The staff says they are in desperate need of foster parents to help clear the shelter so they can make room for animals. They are also working to make sure their own shelter is safe ahead of the storm. 

"We're trying to make sure our shelter is secure as possible. We do have a pretty old facility here, so we're hoping it doesn't blow away in the storm. But we're just doing the best we can with the disaster prep for our own animals. But again, trying to just get some of these animals out into the foster homes so we can clear shelter for emergency situations," says Donna Stucker with the Humane Society.
