NATIONWIDE -- A bold decision by Nike is sparking fierce reaction.

The company confirmed Monday that Colin Kaepernick is the face of one of its most recognized campaigns.

The former San Francisco 49ers quarterback tweeted out confirmation he secured a deal with Nike to be the face of 30th anniversary of the Just Do It campaign. It's led to some cutting out the logo and setting their sneakers on fire while some businesses owners say they will still sell Nike gear.

“I won't disassociate myself with Nike, in fact, it strengthened my opinion on Nike,” Velocity Boutique owner Darrell Hines said.

Kaepernick sparked a movement in protest of racial inequality and police brutality by kneeling during the national anthem. Many have objected, calling his actions disrespectful to the flag and the military.

Many were shocked to learn yesterday that the NFL has had a contract with Kaepernick since 2011. Under this multiyear renewal, Kaepernick will appear in ads, have an apparel line and money will be donated to his charity. The company's stock has taken a hit.

"This is one of the strongest social stands that they've taken. Clearly, this has gotten the attention. Far behind sports, when you look at the protests and the people cutting Nike logo or burning Nike apparel or shoes, you have to remember, look at the all the attention that the company is getting," Charlotte Business Journal sports and business writer Erik Spanberg said.

The NFL provides all NFL teams with their game-day uniforms and sideline apparel and released a statement regarding the Nike deal with Kaepernick.

The NFL's partnership with Nike was just extended this past March to run through 2028.
