NORTH CAROLINA -- UNC Board of Governors passed a resolution that the Board of Trustees and Chancellor Carol Folt has until November to come up with a plan for what to do with Silent Sam.

  • The board is bringing in an outside firm to assess and review the university's preparation and response to issues like these
  • It is also looking at ways to improve codes of conduct
  • Board of Trustees still discussing issues related to the controversy

The board is bringing in an outside firm to do an assessment and review of the university's preparation for and response to last Monday's protest that resulted to the statue being toppled.

They talked about a legal update, reports concerning investigations of alleged criminal misconduct and discussing potential action plans to protect public safety.

They will also look at ways to improve codes of conduct, policies of freedom of expression and procedures to make sure the school is safe and secure.

Members of UNC Board of Trustees and Folt agreed to the resolution.

"We know that the monument has been divisive for a long time but what happened on Monday was wrong. It was absolutely not the solution that we wanted and we will follow the process," said Chancellor Carol Folt. "We're reviewing Monday and now Saturday's demonstrations and the actions that are appropriate will be taken."
