CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Police at UNC-Chapel Hill have confirmed they've filed arrest warrants against three people in relation to the toppling of the Silent Same monument.

Each person faces charges of “misdemeanor riot” and “misdemeanor defacing of a public monument."

Police say the three charged are not affiliated with the university.

Investigators previously told Spectrum News they're talking to witnesses and piecing together a timeline, but District Attorney Jim Woodall says the biggest piece of evidence comes from eyewitness videos.

"The most serious charge and the maximum jail sentence in 120 days," Woodall said. "If there's a message, there is that you can't just break the law."

Police say the identities of the individuals will not be released until arrests have been made.
