CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- An Alamance County Southern heritage group plans to rally on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus next week around the fallen Silent Sam statue.

  • A rally for Silent Sam is scheduled for the evening of Aug. 30.
  • It's being organized by ACTBAC NC.
  • The statue was toppled earlier this week by protesters.

ACTBAC NC, which stands for Alamance County Taking Back Alamance County, posted their intentions on Facebook.

They say they will hold a "Silent Sam Twilight Service" on Aug. 30 to “respectfully, calmly and honorably” show remembrance to Silent Sam.

UNC-Chapel Hill Chancellor Carol Folt did not address the rally specifically but says the university will not relax its vigilance when it comes to future protests.

"I think that we have an obligation as a public institution is to as I said to ensure peaceful protest and that all parties of such a peaceful demonstration can be treated safely,” said Folt. “We will do everything in our power to ensure that takes place and we will also make sure that people know that that has to be done in such a way that is respectful and peaceful."

ATCBAC NC says the monument was a reminder of the sons from Chapel Hill who went to fight for the Southern cause of independence during the Civil War.
