CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- Call it the “Supermarket Sweep” of back to school shopping.

  • This is the 12th year for the Teacher Supply Store at American Legion Hall
  • Local charities stocked the place with $45,000 worth of classroom materials; educators got a $75 voucher for the supplies
  • The store is open again Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The Teacher Supply Store opened its doors for the 12th time Monday afternoon at the American Legion Hall in Chapel Hill.

Local charities stocked the place with $45,000 worth of classroom materials. Educators for the Chapel Hill-Carrboro School District then got a $75 voucher to get any school supplies that they need.

“The purpose is to supplement teacher supply because so many teachers wind up spending their own money,” said volunteer Sarita Allen-Medlin.

“Oh my god. It's incredible. We don't have anything like this in California,” said teacher Polly Clark. She just moved to North Carolina and will teach the 4th grade at Carrboro Elementary.

The store will again open Tuesday from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.
