DURHAM, N.C. -- A Durham woman says two kids attacked her daughter at a summer camp while counselors stood by.

  • The incident was all caught on camera at Campus Hills Park
  • The video shows the woman's daughter getting grabbed by the neck and being hit by two girls
  • Durham's Parks and Rec department plan to comment Wednesday

The incident was all caught on camera at Campus Hills Park and released to her by the parks and recreation department.

In the video sent to Bettina Pennix she says words are exchanged by her daughter and another child, escalating to a third girl joining, grabbing Pennix' daughter by the neck and hitting her.

Pennix main concern is not only that her daughter was suspended but that the counselor wasn't able to stop the fight and is seen laughing while it happens.

"You just don't expect this to happen and then you expect if something like this does happen you expect to at least know that the staff is going to do their job and the best to protect their child and that's not what happened in this case," said Pennix.

In a statement to Spectrum News, the Durham’s Parks and Recreation department says: The safety of our participants is our top priority... The minute we became aware of this incident we took immediate action.  Staff are trained to intervene and deescalate when a situation between children occurs and the employee failed to do so.  This employee is no longer employed by the City of Durham.
