NORTH CAROLINA -- Much of central and eastern North Carolina falls under a moderate (low) chance for severe storms Sunday afternoon and evening.

  • Scattered storms will once again plague the back half of our day
  • Monday and Tuesday will likely feature more stormy afternoons
  • Afternoon storm chances return by Friday

Scattered storms will once again plague the back half of our day. Scattered storms will feed off a hot day in the low to mid 90s, along with high humidity.

Storms will likely linger across portions of the state well in the night. Coverage of storms will shrink from scattered before sunset, to isolated as we move through the night.

If any storms reach severe criteria, the main possible hazards will be: heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, frequent lightning and small hail.

The near stationary front in the region will slowly shift north and east as high pressure appears set to visit the Carolinas midweek. Monday and Tuesday will likely feature more stormy afternoons before completely dry weather arrives Wednesday and Thursday.

So expect scattered storms during a hot afternoon Monday, and isolated showers Tuesday. Due to drier, sunnier conditions Wednesday and Thursday expect hotter temperatures in the low to mid 90s.

Sadly this dry stretch of weather looks to be very brief. Afternoon storm chances return by Friday and we'll continue with an elevated rain threat through the weekend.
