DURHAM, N.C. -- Some Duke University students are concerned about some off-campus bus stops.

  • Students say there are no crosswalks for bus stops in some areas
  • City leaders say a project is underway to to build sidewalks and ramps
  • They want to make it safer for people walking along the street

They say there are no crosswalks for bus stops along South LaSalle Street between Kangaroo Drive and Campus Walk Avenue. The area is home to many students living in off-campus housing.

“Sometimes you don't even know when the car is coming. So you need to make your own decision,” says student Minji Lee. She admits she was to jaywalk across the busy three-lane road to catch a ride.

However, the wait is almost over. City transportation leaders say a larger project is already underway to build sidewalks and ramps in the area. Adding crossings is a part of the plan.

“It should be completed by the end of the year. The project is close to being completed. The crosswalks are one of the last things that would be put in after the sidewalk is finished,” says Dale McKeel, the city's bicycle and pedestrian coordinator.

“It's one of our heavily-pedestrianized areas in Durham. And so we just want to make it safer for people who are walking along the street and also for people to cross the street,” he adds.

Transportation leaders also thought about adding a traffic signal in the area but then later decided against it.
