The event draws attention to building relationships between community members and police officers.

Participants gathered in communities like Hope Valley North and McDougald Terrace.

Durham Police Chief C.J. Davis was there too, and says she looks forward to strengthening bonds and establishing trust in her city.

“Today really epitomizes coming together. I mean you can look at them. The smile on the kids’ faces, the officers engaging. I really think it’s a great place to be and an example not just in Durham, but in other agencies across the country,” said Davis.

Nationwide, about 16,000 communities hosted their own National Night Out celebration.

The organization says about 38 million people participated.
