RALEIGH, N.C. -- The state Department of Transportation proposes building a superstreet as the fix for the U.S. Highway 401 intersection at Fox Road in northeast Raleigh.

The department says the problem area has seen about 63 crashes over a five year period ending in December 2017.

The most recent deadly accident happened over the weekend killing two people.

NCDOT says adding a median could reduce collisions by 60 to 70 percent but people living near the intersection say more needs to be done.

“The average speed of cars coming down here is 60 miles an hour, 65 miles an hour,” said resident Lester Thompson. “We've actually seen cars come much faster. They need a light with turn signals."

“We want folks to understand that safety is the number one to us so we’re looking to make an improvement,” said Asst. Communications Director for NCDOT Jamie Kritzer.

The project would cost about $400,000 and could be complete by 2020 but DOT is hoping to accelerate that process following the deadly crash.
