DURHAM COUNTY, N.C. -- A worker in the Research Triangle Park has been accused of trying to steal $100 million worth of his company’s secrets.

  • SD memory cards are forbidden at Cree, Inc.
  • Officials are searching Bell's phone records

Durham County investigators say it’s likely Cree, Inc.’s info could have been passed on or sold to another company or foreign entity.

The company specializes in LED and lighting technology.

47-year-old Coy Bell is accused of taking 30 years of Cree’s research and illegally cramming it onto a memory card.

He was charged back in June with larceny by employee in excess of $100,000.

According to search warrants, Durham County investigators say an employee found an SD memory card on Cree’s campus in May.

Those types of cards are typically forbidden at the company.

It was handed over to company security and they found 32,000 classified files.

There’s also security footage where, according to warrants, Bell can been seen taking a memory card and transferring files onto it.

Investigators say the amount of information on the card was enough for a competitor to start their own lab based on Cree’s work in mere weeks.

Bell admitted putting the card in his computer to authorities, but said he did not steal the information.

The search warrants say Cree has had several incidents of employees trying to sell or share secrets to competitors.

Durham County authorities are now searching Bell’s phone records to see who he talked to.
