RALEIGH, N.C. -- Legal actions rolled in Monday, trying to make last minute election changes before ballots go to the printers. It’s maneuvering that could affect what voters are casting ballots for this fall.

  • Lawsuits were filed Monday in Wake County court against GOP legislative leaders.
  • Supreme Court hopeful Chris Anglin says his rights are violated because lawmakers prevented him from putting a Republican label next to his name.
  • Legal action comes days before state election officials must finalize composing ballots.

There are separate issues and four separate lawsuits.

Two deal with a law passed on Saturday dealing with partisanship of judicial candidates and two aim to keep some of the six constitutional amendment proposals off the ballot this fall.

One constitutional amendment challenge come from the Gov. Roy Cooper’s office. It is asking two proposals be barred from going on the ballot for being misleading.

One from the NAACP and Clean Air NC is looking to keep four of the amendments from going before voters.

The other issue is for a law that lawmakers overrode a gubernatorial veto to enact on Saturday.

It deals with a judicial candidate not being able to change party affiliation up to 90 days before they file.

That affects multiple candidates this fall including Chris Anglin, who changed his affiliation from Democrat to Republican prior to filing for the state Supreme Court race.

Monday, a judge ordered North Carolina election officials not to finalize ballots while she receives more information about lawsuits filed by Anglin and another judicial candidate.

Wake County Superior Court Judge Rebecca Holt didn't rule specifically whetherAnglin and District Court hopeful Rebecca Edwards would have their party labels on the ballots, like their opponents. Holt asked lawyers for the candidates and for state officials the candidates sued earlier Monday to file briefs and prepare for an Aug. 13 hearing.

The temporary restraining order for the constitutional amendments will be considered on Tuesday morning.
