DURHAM, N.C. -- Family and friends said their final goodbyes to a revered member of the Durham community Monday.

  • The well-known educator and advocate died from a heart attack Tuesday night.
  • Friends say he had a passion for the youth, low-income families, and the arts.
  • Wynn also served as president of Durham Tech from 1977 to 2007.

Funeral services took place for Phail Wynn at Duke Chapel.

He served as Duke University's first vice president for Durham and Regional Affairs.

Before that, Wynn was the president of Durham Tech for nearly 30 years.

Duke University's President Vincent Price spoke about Wynn’s accomplishments in the field of education at the funeral.

"We feel bewildered to know that we will never again hear his infectious laugh rumbling through the Allen Building like one of his beloved Harleys,” said Price. “Above all, we feel bewildered to have lost a great colleague, extraordinary mentor and true friend so suddenly and far too soon."

Wynn died last week of natural causes. He was 70 years old.
