CUMBERLAND COUNTY, NC -- School is back in session for hundreds of students in Cumberland County. 

  • The new superintendent for Cumberland County Schools went to three of the year-round schools for students' first day
  • Dr. Marvin Connelly Jr. is a former paratrooper who's replacing Frank Till, Jr.
  • One of his first tasks is adding more security at the middle and high schools county-wide

Monday, new superintendent for Cumberland County Schools, Dr. Marvin Connelly Jr. went to three of the year-round schools for students' first day. Dr. Connelly is a former paratrooper who's replacing Frank Till, Jr. 

Connelly started July 1, but visiting the three schools was a chance for him to meet many parents and students. Connelly says one of his first tasks is adding more security at the middle and high schools county-wide.

"Cumberland County schools is safer than they've ever been before We just want to provide some additional measures so that people have to stop at the door and be buzzed in." Connelly said. "It's just to give an extra sense of security for our students faculty and staff."

Traditional school for Cumberland County schools begins on Aug. 27. Dr. Connelly is urging driver to be extra vigilant in school zones.
