FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Relief may be coming to people who live near the Louise Street Bridge in Fayetteville. The City Council approved an agreement to replace it.

  • Bridge has been closed since January
  • Residents in the area only have one way to enter and exit their neighborhood
  • Project to be completed by end of 2019

It has been closed since January after inspectors found it was in bad shape. For people who live in the Hollywood Heights subdivision, that closure is causing a lot of hardship. It means they only have one way to both enter and exit their neighborhood.

"There's only two ways you can go, and there's only one way to get in here and that's from the back. That's been an inconvenience," said David Johnson, a resident of the Hollywood Heights community.

In an agreement that the city approved Thursday night, Fayetteville will foot 20 percent of the $1.8 million cost. A grant will reimburse the city for the rest of that agreement with the State Department of Transportation.

Officials estimate that the new bridge will be completed and open by the end of 2019.
