CONCORD, N.C. -- NASCAR fans that wanted a road course race in the Monster Energy NASCAR Cup Series playoffs got their wish though it may be more than they bargained for.

  • Event will run Sept. 30 at Charlotte Motor Speedway
  • It's the third race in this year's playoff
  • It will be the first of its kind at the Concord track

The Bank of America Roval 400 will run Sept. 30 at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The event will run 109 laps over the 2.28 mile layout, littered with 17 turns and a 35-foot elevation change throughout the course.

There are plenty of challenges facing the drivers starting with funneling a field of 40 cars into the first turn on the track and a narrow left-hander that takes the field to the infield. Plus, there is the backstretch "bus stop," where drivers will have to cut their speed drastically to navigate the bend before heading towards the traditional third turn on the oval course.

"It is so fast," said driver A.J. Allmendinger. "From what I saw last week, we had to put tires up because guys were basically jumping through the chicane and making it a straight line.  It's what we need to do, but there is a tire barrier there right there.  If you go in side-by-side, and one person doesn't give it up, somebody is gonna hit that tire barrier, and they're gonna hit it a ton."

The September event will be the first of its kind at the Concord track and driver Joey Logano feels that simply finishing the race will be an accomplishment.

"You may see some fast cars get torn up," Logano said.  "Honestly, I think finishing this thing is priority one."

The race will be the third race in this year's playoffs.  At the conclusion of the event, the 16 eligible playoff drivers will be trimmed to 12, making Charlotte a true "wild-card" in determining the 2018 Cup Series champion.
