Racist and anti-Semitic graffiti on the "Dare to Dissent" mural commissioned by the American Civil Liberties Union of North Carolina was first discovered last week.

Dare Coulter, the artist of the mural, says she was confused after hearing the mural was defaced and that confusion hasn’t gone away. But she says she needs to sideline the hurt to get the piece back to its original message, and she plans to involve the community to change the mural up a bit to reclaim it.

“Raleigh feels like this was wrong and this was terrible and unfortunate so it’s not even a thing of trying to give credence to those words because you try and understand hate and it’s not going to make sense,” Coulter said. “So we don’t tolerate intolerance and you don’t have to. We’re choosing not to tolerate it.”

Raleigh Police say there have been no arrests made but the investigation into who may have done it is ongoing.
