Tropical Storm Chris is forecast to become a category 1 hurricane by Tuesday afternoon. Fortunately, the storm will continue to stay just far enough off the North Carolina coast that it will not impact the weather in the state.

  • Chris to become a hurricane today.
  • The storm will have no impact on our weather.
  • Dangerous rip currents and surf will occur along NC beaches.

However, dangerous surf conditions continue at North Carolina's beaches. Everyone is strongly encouraged to stay out of the water at the beach for another day. Strong rip currents could pull even experienced swimmers away from shore. Lifeguards have reported numerous rip current rescues since the weekend.

Tuesday will be a mostly sunny day for much of the state with highs warming to near 90 or the low 90s in the afternoon.

A cold front will approach the state late Wednesday bringing scattered storms to the state by evening. The front will also quickly push then Hurricane Chris away from the Carolina coast through the rest of the week.
