The first Atlantic hurricane of the year has formed in the Atlantic. The system had first become Tropical Storm Beryl Thursday. Beryl strengthened into a category one hurricane early Friday morning as it moved over the warm Atlantic waters.

The storm could continue to strengthen some during the day Friday, but that trend is not forecast to continue into the weekend. Beryl will encounter wind shear over the next few days that should cause the storm to weaken this weekend. It could become just an open tropical wave or a disorganized area of showers and storms, as it moves into the Caribbean early next week.

Beryl does not appear to be a threat to the United States.

Closer to the Carolinas, a weak area of low pressure off the southeast coast has a moderate chance of becoming a weak tropical system over the next several days. It may not move very much from the weekend into early next week but is forecast to stay offshore. For now, it appears the only impact to the Carolina coast from this disturbance is an increased threat for rip currents for the next several days.
