CHESTERFIELD COUNTY, S.C. -- After a brief Amber Alert Tuesday, an 11-month old baby was found dead and her mother is facing charges.

  • Breanna Lewis told officers someone snatched her baby.
  • Investigators do not think it was a kidnapping.
  • Lewis is charged with filing a false police report.

Chesterfield County sheriff's deputies say Harlee Lewis was found dead in a diaper box about 1,000 yards away from a home in Chesterfield, South Carolina.

Officers say the disappearance wasn't a kidnapping and the child's mother, 19-year-old Breanna Lewis, is charged with filing a false police report

She told deputies that she was walking to her mailbox when a man jumped out of van, hit her on the head several times, took her child and drove off.

Deputies say they arrived at Jackson Road, just east of Chesterfield, at around 2 p.m. Tuesday.

They say Lewis had bruises on her face when officers arrived to the scene and told them that she had never seen the person who assaulted her before.

The FBI and State Law Enforcement Division are assisting in the investigation.

She is being held at the Chesterfield County Detention Center and is the primary suspect.
