WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- The boats are out for Memorial Day weekend and so are state wildlife officers.

  • There will be checkpoints on the water all over the state
  • Federal law prohibits boating under the influence of drugs and alcohol
  • Remember to wear your life jacket

North Carolina Wildlife has set up voluntary boat checkpoints across the state so boaters can be sure they have what they need on the water. Officers say life jackets are the most forgotten and most essential item.

“You've got cars on the road, they have seat belts and air bags to help save your life. The one thing you have on your boat is the life jackets and people just don't take the time to wear it," N.C. Wildlife officer Brent Ward said.

Wildlife officers will be manning the checkpoints all weekend.
