GARNER, N.C. -- Don't leave your common sense behind if you are heading out of town this holiday weekend.

  • There has been a spike in break-ins in Garner
  • Poice say keep an eye out for unknown people in your neighborhood
  • Police say to not announce travel plans on social media

Garner Police say a recent spike in car and residential break-ins is taking place due to residents not locking their homes and vehicles.

They suggest keeping an extra eye out for unknown people in your neighborhood and make sure to keep your vacation plans off of social media.

"There are certain things you can do at your house: putting your lights on timers so that people think at night that you are home and the lights cut on and cut off," said Captain Joseph Binns of Garner Police Department. "Those kinds of things are simple things you can do and fairly inexpensive, but it also makes sure that someone may think or guess someone is actually there or not."

While Garner is seeing an increase in break-ins, the Wake County Sheriff's Department says they are not seeing a spike county-wide.
