Much of central and eastern North Carolina will get a break from our recent daily rain chances on Thursday.

However, that will not be the case near the South Carolina border. A front will keep the chance for a few scattered showers and storms over parts of the Sandhills and southeastern North Carolina.

Locally heavy downpours have already been reported very early this Thursday morning over portions of Scotland and Robeson Counties. More scattered showers and storms could pop up through late morning and afternoon in an area from near Fayetteville and Wilmington to the South Carolina border.

The rest of central and eastern North Carolina will see a mix of clouds and sun through most of Thursday. Afternoon highs will warm to the mid 80s across the region.

There is very little chance for rain coming up for Friday. The last day of the week will be partly cloudy with highs again in the 80s.

The chance for rain will increase through the upcoming Memorial Day weekend. It now appears likely that a tropical system will develop in the Gulf of Mexico over the next few days. That will spread tropical moisture across the southeastern United States through the weekend.

For North Carolina, the holiday weekend may not be a complete washout. Saturday morning should be dry with just scattered storms expected Saturday afternoon. The showers and storms will become more widespread across the state for Sunday and certainly for Memorial Day when heavy downpours will be possible.
