RALEIGH, N.C. – Monday night’s heavy rains in north Raleigh caused a sinkhole to form near a busy intersection.

  • The 20-foot sinkhole formed after several inches of rain fell in a short amount of time Monday.
  • Detours are posted.
  • Drivers should avoid the area for a few days.

A 20-foot sinkhole formed on Newton Road near Six Forks Road.

The sinkhole stretches across almost the entire roadway.         

As a result, Newton Road is closed from Six Forks Road to Newton Way.         

Crews will work over the next few days to repair a water main that broke during the storms.

Drivers are advised to avoid the area if possible.

Detours are as follows:

  • Drivers heading west on Newton Road, should turn left on Van Thomas Drive, right on Woodbend Drive and back onto Six Forks Road
  • Drivers heading north on Six Forks Road should turn right on Woodbend Drive, left on Van Thomas Drive and right onto Newton Road
  • Drivers heading south on Six Forks Road should turn left on Woodbend Drive, left on Van Thomas Drive and right onto Newton Road

Water service has been restored to people living in the area.
