WAKE COUNTY, N.C. -- The State Highway Patrol is now working to find the family of a man who was killed Tuesday morning along NC 540.

  • Man struck in westbound lanes of NC 540 Tuesday morning.
  • Traffic was affected during the morning commute.
  • No charges will be filed.

It all happened around 5:45 a.m.

Troopers said 30-year-old Ricky Lee Walker, Jr., who was struck and killed was involved in a total of four collisions before he died.

His car was initially struck on the westbound side of NC 540 where it connects with I-40. It was stuck in a ditch and was hit again on the eastbound side.

That's when the man got out of his car and walked towards the middle of the highway.

Troopers say that's when he was struck two more times. They're not sure why he was in the middle of the road.

For hours, officials inspected the other cars involved. They say everyone who hit Walker stopped.

Traffic was gridlocked for several hours.

No charges will be filed.

Authorities won't be able to determine if alcohol was a factor until the M.E.'s preliminary report is released.
