RALEIGH, N.C. -- In three weeks, more than 150 professional golfers from around the world will compete in the REX Hospital Open from May 31 to June 3 at TPC Wakefield Plantation in North Raleigh.
On Wednesday, dozens of media professionals from the Triangle were able to get a sneak peek of the tournament during the "Annual Jim Connors Memorial Media Cup".
The event was named after the late Spectrum News sports director Jim Connors since his passing nearly three years ago. The award-winning journalist and community advocate always supported the REX Hospital Open and it was widely known as one of his favorite events.
Connors' son, Brice Connors, teamed up with several sports reporters and anchors from Spectrum News for a day on the golf course to celebrate his father's life and legacy.
"He had a lot of passion not only for what he did for his family but also for his co-workers. I was fortunate enough to gain a little bit of that fire and passion and I try to live my life each day for that extra amount that I think was carried over from him," Brice Connors said.
Connors passed away after a brief and sudden illness in 2015. He joined Spectrum News in 2002 and was a part of the team who helped start News 14 Carolina.
This year’s REX Hospital Open, part of the Web.com Tour, marks the 31st anniversary of UNC REX Healthcare hosting charity golf.
The Web.com TOUR is a chance for rising golf stars to earn their PGA TOUR cards.
Recent winners of the REX Hospital Open include Raleigh native Chesson Hadley, Conrad Shindler and Trey Mullinax who are currently playing on the PGA TOUR.
From great golf to food trucks to live music, this year’s tournament has something for everyone to enjoy. Proceeds will support expanding Neuroscience care and services at UNC REX. That expansion will help patients get the specialized care they require when confronted with stroke, aneurysms and other neurological diseases.
Tickets are available for purchase at rexhospitalopen.com. A daily ground ticket is $10, week ground tickets are $20 and Champion’s Club tickets are $100.
Kids 16 and under attend for free. All military (including active duty, reserve and veterans), first responders and Wake County Public School employees also receive free admission.
