DURHAM, N.C. -- Durham police are investigating a collision between a train and pick-up truck Monday evening which left two children injured.

  • A train and a pick-up truck collided in Durham shortly before 6 p.m. on Monday.
  • Three occupants of the truck -- an adult male, an 8-year-old boy, and a 7-year-old girl -- were transported to the hospital where the boy remains in critical condition.
  • Durham Police have concluded that the railroad equipment on the scene was working properly, and the boy was not wearing a seatbelt.

Police say it happened near the intersection of East Pettigrew and South Driver streets shortly before 6 p.m.

Three occupants of the truck, an adult and two children, were transported to the hospital with injuries.

Eight-year-old Jaden Hyman suffered critical injuries while his 2-year old sister, Jace Hyman, had minor injuries. Police say Jaden Hyman wasn't wearing a seatbelt.

Their father, Ananias Hyman, who was driving the truck, was not hurt.

No one on the train was injured.

Officers say the truck was in between the crossing arms when the bed of the truck was struck on the passenger side. They also say the rail equipment on the scene was working properly.

No charges have been filed at this time.
