RALEIGH, N.C. -- Parents of some of the students involved in last Thursday's fight at Athens Drive High say they are unhappy with how the situation has been handled.

"What the video does not tell you is that several adult men came to this school with intentions to harm kids in attendance here," said parent Keith McCrimmon. "The video does not tell you that the parking lot was not properly supervised for the safety of the students leaving campus."

Jermaine Canteen, 18, is charged with a felony for his involvement in the fight.

Canteen made his first appearance in a Wake County courtroom on Wednesday.

Two other men received misdemeanor assault charges.

All three of the men are not students at Athens Drive.

"My initial reaction to the video when I saw it because my son's never been in a fight, so when I first saw the video, I was shocked to see it," McCrimmon said.

These parents say the visitors on campus that day are the only ones responsible for what took place.

They say the students were defending their peer and believe the suspensions their kids have received are too severe.

"They love each other like brothers and have been with each other since they were small, since they were kids, so as far as them fighting each other, that is false," McCrimmon said.

On Thursday, the group of parents acknowledged they wished there could have been a different outcome.

"These are good kids that were at school," McCrimmon said. "They were where they were supposed to be during their normal everyday routine. Are we willing to punish them for the actions of others and for their love for one another? And when I say for their love of one another, the Athens Drive High School community know what I mean."

A spokeswoman for WCPSS says the school will be reassessing how the parking lot where the fight took place is secured going forward.
