DURHAM, N.C. – N.C. Central’s chancellor is now formally installed, but the celebration comes with a side of controversy.

Johnson Akinleye actually took office last year, so today was more of a formality.

Many students, lawmakers and other supporters gathered at the arena to watch the ceremony.

Former Vice Chancellor Benjamin Durant is suing him and the university.

Durant says Akinleye misused state funds to buy a GMC Yukon Denali.

He also claims Akinleye wanted to unfairly steer a multi-million dollar contract to a private company to build on-campus housing.

Durant says in January when he blew the whistle, Akinleye fired him.

Akinleye didn't address the lawsuit in his speech. Instead he talked about the service he will provide as chancellor.

“As such, North Carolina Central University is a gem among gem and I assure you that we will continue to provide North Carolinans with the distinct opportunity and action they need to help their education success and realize their professional dreams and aspirations,” he said.

The school put out a statement yesterday saying the university did nothing wrong and will defend itself and Akinleye in court.
