GREENE COUNTY, N.C. -- Authorities say a man has confessed to killing his grandfather and 6-year-old cousin.

The sheriff's office says 20-year-old Myles Jefferson Duggins shot and killed 68-year-old Johnny Boy Jefferson and the child at a home on Davis Grove Church near Snow Hill Tuesday evening. He's now facing two counts of murder and is being held without bond.

Sheriff Lemmie Smith told Spectrum News that Duggins was trying to kill himself when family members intervened which led to the shooting.

Authorities say Johnny Jefferson was pronounced dead at the scene, and the 6 year old later died during surgery at the hospital.

After the shooting, police believe Duggins fled the scene in a stolen car which was later found in the Raleigh. That's where Duggins was arrested.

Duggins is currently being held in the Greene County Detention Center without bond.

Greene County Schools identified the child killed as Isiah Hill. He was a first-grader at Snow Hill Primary School.
