DURHAM, N.C. -- A Durham teenager has confessed to a shooting that took place at a Durham Walmart last week.

“That I'm sorry. I wasn't trying to harm anybody,” says Justin Atwater, 18, from inside the Durham County Jail.

He admits he went to the Walmart on New Hope Commons Drive last week after learning his mother and a family friend got into an argument over money. Atwater jumped into the argument but then tried to walk away from the friend.

“He followed me out there and kept acting on and I felt like he was going to harm me and my family," says Atwater, "I took action.”

The friend and a female bystander were hit and are now recovering.

Atwater later turned himself into authorities and now apologizes to both victims.

“It really was messing with me that I did wrong to somebody that I felt I could've did it in a different way,” admits Atwater.

He blames his actions on being a bipolar schizophrenic.

He says before the shooting, he was getting off drugs, working towards his GED and a job, and going to church more than once a week.

“God was working miracles through me and he still is. I might be through this wall but he's still working through me.”

Atwater says he now regrets going to the Walmart.

A judge set his bond at $2.5 million. He's expected to be back in court later this month.
