ZEBULON, N.C. -- Zebulon Police have identified the suspect involved in Sunday's officer-involved shooting as Kurt Lee Walters, 30, of Zebulon.

According to a release by the department, a man thought to be Walters called the police department at approximately 5 p.m Sunday reporting himself to be a “wanted subject” for absconding from parole.

The caller gave his name and stated that he was an “Indian” male with long hair, a beard, wearing khaki pants and a white shirt at the Walmart near Gannon Avenue.

Upon arrival, Walters was not located at the Walmart, rather he was found at the Murphy USA Express nearby.

Officers began speaking with Walters when he reportedly became combative, pushing one of the officers and producing "a weapon" which he pointed at an officer. At this time a second officer pointed his firearm at Walters and fired one shot, striking him in the neck.

Walters was taken to WakeMed where he is listed in stable condition.

No officers injured during the encounter.

The officer who fired the shot has been identified as Nathanial Brown, 52, who has been with the police department for approximately 12 years. The other officer involved, Robert Prichard, 35, has been with the department for 10 years. Neither officer has ever been involved with officer-involved shootings previously.

Brown has been placed on non-disciplinary administrative duty, as is common procedure.

Walters has a lengthy criminal record, although he has no previous encounters with the Zebulon Police Department.

A vehicle that was reported stolen earlier that same day in Wake County was recovered in the Walmart parking lot, and it is believed that Mr. Walters stole that vehicle and used it to drive to the area.

The NC SBI is conducting an investigation into the shooting.
