CARTERET COUNT, N.C. -- The fallout from the Parkland, Florida school shooting is having an impact on schools across the country, including here in North Carolina.

That's why the Carteret County Board of Commissioners has given Sheriff Asa Buck's office the green light to create a new position that will help keep schools in that district safe.

Sheriff Buck selected Lieutenant Michael Panzarella, a 26 year veteran with the sheriff's office, to serve as the new school intelligence liaison detective.

Lt. Panzarella will be responsible for conducting investigations, providing safety training and updating school safety plans.

He will be the single point of contact for sharing information between all nine local law enforcement agencies in the county.

“There's become a need for us to even more share intelligence that we receive such as threats to our school,” said Lt. Panzarella.  “Our children should feel safe when they come to school, they should want to learn."

Lt. Panzarella started his new position on March 20.
