If you need a reminder that March can bring wild weather, just watch the conditions across North Carolina over the next 24 hours.  Parts of the state could see strong storms Tuesday afternoon. Other locations could see snow by Wednesday morning.

A complex storm system is sweeping across the Carolinas Tuesday. After a round of early morning rain, very little rain will fall over much of the state through midday and early afternoon. A second round of thunderstorms is then expected to develop across southeastern North Carolina by late afternoon and early evening. The greatest chance for these storms will come south and east of Fayetteville and close to Wilmington. That is where the Storm Prediction Center has posted a level 1 to 3 threat for severe storms on their five level scale.

There's an enhanced risk for severe storms in southeastern NC Tuesday afternoon.

Some of the storms that form near the southeastern coast of North Carolina Tuesday afternoon could produce damaging wind gusts and hail. That is in addition to heavy downpours and lightning. There is also a small threat for isolated tornadoes.

Everyone in this part of the state should closely monitor the changing weather conditions and have a way to receive weather warnings in case they are issued.

The threat for severe storms in southeastern North Carolina will come to an end through the evening.

Later in the night, low pressure will move off the coast and strengthen.  That will cause rain to spread across the state.

As colder air moves into North Carolina, Tuesday night's rain will mix with and change to snow in some locations by Wednesday morning.

Snow is possible Wednesday morning from the mountains to the Piedmont.

Accumulating snow is likely in the North Carolina mountains Wednesday morning. A Winter Storm Warning has already been issued for the Boone area where 3 to 6 inches is possible.

Little to no accumulation is expected outside of the mountains. However, the Triad and Triangle could see snow or a mix of rain and snow falling during the Wednesday morning commute. With temperatures hovering just above freezing, most roads should stay wet. A light dusting on the grass is possible when quick bursts of snow occur.

Locations from Charlotte to Fayetteville to east of I-95 should see just chilly rain showers Wednesday morning.
