NORTH CAROLINA -- Slick conditions and speed led to several serious collisions Tuesday morning due to icy conditions.

The State Highway Patrol said it responded to more than 2,000 collisions across the state since Monday’s winter weather.

Many bridges, overpasses and off/on ramps were slippery as temperatures dropped below freezing.

NCDOT had more than 800 employees working across the state on de-icing operations at the height of the morning commute.

Temperatures climbed above freezing around mid-morning which ended the icy conditions.
