CHAPEL HILL, N.C. -- UNC Chancellor Carol Folt is expected to ask Gov. Roy Cooper to petition the State Historical Commission to relocate the controversial Silent Sam statue.

Tuesday night, an anonymous group of 17 University of North Carolina faculty members announced on Twitter a notice from Folt to have the Confederate monument removed from its current spot on campus.

The group previously sent a letter demanding the university take down Silent Sam by Thursday or the group would "move the statue themselves.”

The group of staffers has backed off with that ultimatum given Folt's latest action.

The statue was erected on campus in 1913 and is a memorial to the Confederate alumni who fought and died during the Civil War.
