After another day of record breaking high temperatures some of us may experience cooler temperatures for Friday. The forecast is more uncertain for areas from Raleigh to the north as we finish off the work week. A cold front will try to settle south across northern North Carolina Friday morning.

Just how far south the cold front makes it is focus of the uncertainty. We have a forecast computer model that suggests the front, and the cold air behind it will work its way into parts of central North Carolina. That would keep highs in the 50s near the Virginia boarder, the 60s near the Triangle, and the 70s in the Sandhills. Then there are models that suggest the front and cooler air will stay to our north and Friday's highs could be well into the 70s or back to near 80 for everybody.

This is the type of situation that keeps meteorologist humble. So, for now we'll forecast highs in the low to mid 70s around the Triangle and near 80 in the Sandhills. We feel comfortable that southern sections will be warm, but there is low confidence for the forecast the farther north you go.

On the bright side, the weekend forecast is more certain. Highs in the upper 70s to near 80 are forecast for Saturday and Sunday. There's only a slight chance for a shower Saturday afternoon with a better chance for showers late Sunday and again Monday.

Highs should return to the 60s for the first half of next week.
