NEW HANOVER COUNTY, N.C. -- New Hanover County Parks and Gardens has to spend nearly $50,000 every year just to repair damage caused by vandals. Last week, someone burned a part of the fence at Smith Creek Park.

Officials said this is the sixth time in the past year the park has been hit.

In a few past cases, surveillance cameras led to some arrests but the parks director says they only help so much.

“They are great if they’re in the right spot but that doesn’t always occur. Smith creek is 160 some acres so it’s difficult to cover every piece,” said Tara Duckworth, Parks Director.

So far, no arrests have been made in the recent case.
