DURHAM -- Durham Mayor Steve Schewel took the stage Monday night for his first "State of the City" address.

The mayor says while Durham is a growing and prosperous city much of the prosperity is not being shared.

"We know that 20 percent of our residents, mostly people of color, do not share in our prosperity," said Schewel. "And we are committed to changing that."

Schewel said some of the major areas that must be tackled include growth, racial and economic justice and affordable housing.

"Fifteen-thousand households in Durham are what is called severely housing burdened,” explained Schewel. "That is, they are paying more than 50 percent of their income for housing. And half of those families are living on income of less than $20,000 per year for a family of four.”

Schewel said his people are working hard to subsidize and build affordable rentals in Durham and believes that finding a way to advocate and serve with positively impact the Bull City.
