FAYETTEVILLE -- A hospital volunteer is charged with stealing gift cards meant to be used for a charity event for cancer patients.

71-year-old Barbara Flowers was arrested during her shift this morning at Cape Fear Valley Cancer Center.

Flowers stole more than $900 dollars worth of donated gift cards that were supposed to be auctioned off during a fundraiser.

The money goes to cancer patients to help pay for things like rent, utilities, and medications while they're getting treatment.

"It gives us pleasure and joy to be a help to other people," said Cancer Center nurse, Gwendolyn McLeod. "That's naturally in us all. Hopefully by exposing this, many great things will happen for our patients and for the Cancer Center."

If you'd like to help the Cancer Center by donating or restocking their gift cards, contact the Cape Fear Valley Foundation at (910) 615-1285.
