DURHAM---Duke University is taking heat from some Durham residents.

They say students living off campus are hosting loud parties and some students are getting rowdy.

“At least at the height of the party, they would be very loud. They would be in clear violation of the noise ordnance,” said Alisa Johnson, who runs Durham Neighborhood United. The network was formed in response to off-campus students.

“It's an organization of homeowners and residents that live in neighborhoods close to Duke University that have experienced problems with students off-campus.”

Johnson said the problem had quieted over the years, but she recently sent a letter to city council saying the trend is going in reverse.

“They start late at night so they would wake up people, in particular, parents with children who have to go to school the next day.”

She said she and other neighbors have reached out to police and school leaders.

“And we do know that they do talk to the students after the parties, but we don't know what they say.”

According to the Duke student handbook, students can be punished for violating local ordinances, including those involving noise and alcohol. Johnson says DNU members plan to take up with issue with school and city leaders at their next meeting, next month.

“It's just a certain set, or subset of students that tend to cause an extraordinary amount of problems.”
