RALEIGH, N.C. -- Warmth for Wake is continuing its winter tradition of delivering firewood to help keep heating costs low.

Volunteers come to Raleigh's Yard Waste Center every other Saturday to chop usable wood before taking it to seniors in need throughout Wake County.

Although Warmth for Wake has done this for 40 winters, they say the cold snap that took over the county in January hammers home the point of why this service is still needed.

"People have opened up their heat bill in the last couple of weeks and saw it doubled in a lot of cases," said Denise Kissel of Warmth for Wake. "When you're on a fixed income like Social Security, this can make a big difference in whether or not you have enough money to cover your bills."

Although Warmth for Wake organizes the volunteer effort, the volunteers come from places such as the Civil Air Patrol and North Carolina State's chapter of Alpha Phi Omega, a service-based fraternity.
